Curtain alterations and relining

Curtains being altered on the cutting table in the Casa by Joanna workroom
Alterations are handled with the same care as new making.

Good curtains are worth keeping. If you have moved house and the drops are wrong, if a beloved pair has faded lining but perfect face fabric, or if a heading style now feels dated, the answer is very often alteration rather than replacement, at a fraction of the cost of making new.

What can be altered

  • Shortening and lengthening, including rehemming to a new drop after a move.
  • Relining, replacing tired, sun damaged lining, or upgrading to blackout, thermal or interlining.
  • Resizing widths, splitting one wide pair into two, or joining widths for a larger window.
  • Changing headings, converting pencil pleat to pinch pleat or wave for a completely refreshed look.
  • Repairs, restitching hems, replacing hooks and tapes, and remaking returns and leading edges.

Honest assessment first

Not every curtain justifies the work, and Joanna will tell you plainly when replacement is the better value. Bring the curtains to the workroom or send photographs and measurements, and you will get a straightforward opinion and a clear price before anything is unpicked.

New home, inherited curtains?

Curtains left by previous owners are often beautifully made for windows that are almost, but not quite, yours. Rehemming, relining and rehanging inherited curtains is one of the most satisfying and economical jobs the workroom does.

Curtain Alterations: your questions answered

Is it worth altering curtains rather than buying new?

Very often, yes. If the face fabric is good quality and in good condition, alteration typically costs a fraction of new making, especially for interlined or premium fabric curtains.

Can you change the heading style on my existing curtains?

Usually, yes. Converting a gathered heading to pinch pleat or wave transforms the look of a room using the fabric you already own.

Can old curtains be relined with blackout lining?

Yes. Relining with blackout or thermal lining is one of the most common workroom jobs, and it noticeably improves both darkness and warmth.
