Made to measure curtains, sewn by hand

Made to measure teal curtains hung either side of a sash window in a Nottingham living room
Full length made to measure curtains, fitted and dressed by Joanna.

Ready made curtains are cut to fit an average window. Yours almost certainly is not average, and that difference shows in every gap, every awkward drop and every heading that never quite sits right. Made to measure curtains from Casa by Joanna are designed for your exact window, your ceiling height, your light and the way you actually use the room.

Joanna measures every window personally, helps you choose from hundreds of fabrics, linings and heading styles, then cuts and sews each pair by hand in her Nottinghamshire workroom. The result hangs, stacks and draws exactly as it should, and keeps doing so for years.

Heading styles to suit every home

The heading is the personality of a curtain, and choosing well makes an enormous difference to how a room feels.

  • Wave creates soft, continuous ripples that suit modern homes and large glazed openings beautifully.
  • Pinch pleat, in double or triple pleats, gives a tailored, classic look that never dates.
  • Pencil pleat is a versatile, gathered heading that works with both poles and tracks.
  • Eyelet offers clean, contemporary folds on a pole, ideal for relaxed living spaces.
  • Goblet and cartridge pleats bring formal elegance to tall windows and period rooms.

Linings that work as hard as they look

Standard cotton lining protects fabric and improves the drape. Interlining adds a soft, full, luxurious weight and noticeably improves warmth, which matters in period homes with single glazing. Blackout lining transforms bedrooms and nurseries, and thermal linings help keep heating bills down through a Nottinghamshire winter. Joanna will recommend honestly, based on the room, not the price of the extras.

Bay windows, tall windows and awkward shapes

Bay windows are where handmade really earns its keep. Joanna measures each angle of the bay, specifies bent tracks or bay poles that follow the curve precisely, and calculates fullness so the curtains stack neatly off the glass. Tall stairwell windows, arched windows and doors with glazing all have their own solutions, and very few of them come off a shelf.

Fabrics chosen in your own light

Fabric looks different in a showroom than it does in your sitting room at dusk. That is why Joanna brings the books to you. Linens, velvets, wools, cottons and sheers from leading fabric houses can be held against your walls and furniture in your own light before you decide, and generous samples can be left with you.

Made to Measure Curtains: your questions answered

How much do handmade curtains cost?

Price depends on fabric, drop, width, heading and lining. As a guide, a standard window in a mid range fabric with full making and fitting typically starts from several hundred pounds a pair, while large bays and premium fabrics cost more. Your written quotation itemises everything, with no obligation.

Do you supply the fabric or can I provide my own?

Both. Joanna works with leading fabric houses and can supply fabric at competitive prices, or she can make up fabric you already own or have fallen in love with elsewhere.

What is the difference between lined and interlined curtains?

Lined curtains have a single cotton lining that protects the face fabric and improves the hang. Interlined curtains add a soft padded layer between face and lining, giving a fuller, more luxurious drape and much better insulation.

Can you fit tracks and poles as well?

Yes. Supply and fitting of poles, tracks, bay tracks and pelmet boards is all part of the service, so everything is measured, fitted and dressed by the same person who made your curtains.
